The 5 September flight marks only the second in-flight ignition of the RocketMotorTwo rocket, and the second supersonic flight. Details of the flight are immediately unavailable, but it likely met or exceeded the 29 April first in-flight burn duration of 16s and Mach 1 speed.

 

"SS2 has successfully completed another supersonic rocket-powered test flight! Hit our planned duration, altitude, and speed," the company wrote on its Twitter account.

Perjantaina suoritetulla koelennolla SpaceShipTwo nousi 71000 jalan korkeuteen ja saavutti 1,4 Machin nopeuden:

 

SpaceShipTwo went higher and faster than it's been before on Friday and Virgin Group President Sir Richard Branson is predicting it will reach space sometime in 2014. Branson had hoped the reusable passenger-carrying rocket would have slipped out of the atmosphere by the end of 2013 but Friday's flight showed progress toward the ultimate goal. The spacecraft hit Mach 1.4 and 71,000 feet (from a starting altitude of 46,000) in flight, which was captured from multiple angles by video cameras on the mothership Eve and the spacecraft itself.

Virgin Galacticin ensimmäinen avaruusturismilento siirtyy jälleen jonkin verran eteenpäin, eli vuoden 2015 puolelle. Aikoinaanhan optimistiset arviot veikkasivat vuotta 2011 lentojen aloitusvuodeksi.

 

Virgin owner and British billionaire Richard Branson told David Letterman this week that he hopes to board the first flight early next year. The company previously said it wanted to get the first flight launched by the end of 2014.

 

The company for years has been pushing back its launch date as it works to overcome challenges developing its rocket motor. When New Mexico first agreed to build the quarter-billion-dollar spaceport with Virgin Galactic as an anchor tenant, officials predicted flights would start in 2011.

SpaceShipTwo laivaston uusi VSS Unity teki eilen ensilennon. Vielä ei lennetty omillaan, vaan lähes neljän tunnin testilento suoritettiin kokonaisuudessaan VMS Eve emo-/kantokoneeseen kiinnitettynä. Testilennon aikana tarkkailtiin mm. avaruuslennokin toimivuutta kylmissä olosuhteissa 50000 jalan korkeudessa.

Ohjelma etenee. VSS Unity suoritti eilen toisen rakettimoottori-testilennon. Puolen minuutin poltolla saavutettiin 1.9 machin nopeus ja lähes 115 000 jalan korkeus. Richard Branson ei ole vielä ilmoittanut koska kaupalliset matkustajalennot on tarkoitus aloittaa.

Vihdoinkin näyttää siltä, että piakkoin alkaa tapahtua. Sir Richard Branson aikoo päästä avaruuteen ensi maaliskuuhun mennessä aloittamaan Virgin Galacticin avaruusturismin. Branson aikoo siis olla ensimmäisellä lennolla FAA:n sertifioitua Virgin Galacticin avaruuslennot.

Toinen miljardööri, Cirque du Soleilin perustaja Guy Laliberte on ehtinyt avaruuteen huomattavasti aikaisemmin, jo v. 2009 Kansainväliselle Avaruusasemalle 12 päiväksi, mikä lysti maksoi 35 miljoonaa dollaria.

Virgin Galacticin matkalippu "sinne ja takaisin" kustantaa noin 200000 taalaa, jolla saa lennon 62 mailin eli 100 kilometrin korkeuteen, muutaman minuutin mittaisen painottomuuden tunteen ja liu´un takaisin maanpinnalle.
