Moi, Great day yesterday. Pitty about the heat haze, kind of ruined half my photos :( Thanks for the advice Mikko, I had a great time. I'm hoping to go spotting on Saturday again so hopefully the weather remains clear for the weekend :)

Kiitos,

Dave

Jotta moro vaan sinnekin :)

Looks like the weather just keeps getting better for you :)

Were you on the rocks at the end of 22R with a (pretty) girl? And later at the evening on top of the brick piles?

Yea, looks good for tomorrow. That was indeed me with my girlfriend Noora, who's also in to aviation thankfully! We will be there again tomorrow, hoping to catch the Aeroflot MD11 and all the other Finnair heavies ;D Maybe will see you all there  :)

The aim is to catch the arrivals (runway 22L hopefully) and then catch the heavy departures mid way down runway 22R. Do you know if it's possible to shot departures without a step ladder?

Kiitos for the reply.

Regards,

Dave

It is possible: either through the fence or from some spots over the fence. I guess you have already seen FAP's spotting points http://www.fap.fi/index.php?location=spotting - the PDF file is very detailed.

Instructions below assume you are coming from Kehä 3 or Tikkurilantie to Katriinantie (from west / parallel to RWY 04).

1) There is a bus stop at the corner of DHL and next to it a small hill. From there you can see nose's of the planes.

2) After next bus stop and less than 150 meters of walk you find an empty asphalt area separated from the road and at the end of it there is (again) a small hill. Rear's of the planes can be seen here.

Distance between those two spots is around 500 meters so it is rather easy to change location by foot. =)

One rather good place for shooting without a ladder can be found from this point (center of the aerial photo):

Google maps

There is a bus stop right next to the fence on the airport side of the road (katriinantie). You just walk about 15 meters from the bus stop and climb on a very small "hill" and you'll get an almost perfect view to the whole visible part of the runway. All the heavies and some of the smaller birds are within the reach of 400mm from this spot, however 100mm is too much for the heavy sideshots, if the plane is still on the ground ;)

Another bird from same spot...

I believe these all are shot without the ladder, however even a short (30cm) ladder definately would be helpful as it's very easy to get the fence in the picture without one. Not impossible though...

Moi!

Both Mikko's, Kiitos for your help with regards to possible spotting locations! Your help was very much appreciated! Myself and my girlfriend had a great day catching both arrivals and departures. Pitty the Aeroflot MD-11F was cancelled. In the end, for the heavies departures, we ended up next to the DHL building. Caught some great heavies on take off so I'm chuffed with the results.

I'm heading back home to Ireland on Tuesday but have enjoyed my time in Finland and will certainly try keeping up to date with Finnish aviation through this website (and google translator  ;D ) and through my girlfriend who's actually a regular reader and member of this forum but is a bit shy of posting.

Thanks again guys
