Asiantuntijaryhmä ehdottaa nyt Heathrown nykyisten kahden kiitotien pidentämistä ja "katkaisemista keskeltä kahtia", jolloin kummankin kiitotien alkupäähän laskeuduttaisiin ja kiitoteiden keskikohdalta loppupäähän päin noustaisiin ilmaan - samanaikaisesti, jolloin kapasiteetti "tuplaantuisi", koska käytössä olisi 4 kiitotietä. Mielenkiintoinen ehdotus, mutta kunkin kiitotien maksimipituudeksi tulisi ilmeisesti vain 2 km. Riittääkö se kaikille konetyypeille maksimipainoilla?

Tutkin asiaa uudemman kerran mm. Google Earthin avulla ja näyttäisi siltä, että nykyisiä kiitoteitä saatettaisiin pidentää aina 5500 metriin, ilman liian radikaaleja muutostöitä. Kiitotietä ei katkaistaisikaan fyysisesti keskeltä, vaan operoitaisiin esim. niin, että alkupäähän tehtäisiin laskeutumisia 2000-2500 metriin asti jolloin loppupäähän jäisi 3000-3500 metriä nousuja varten, mikä kuullostaa jo huomattavasti paremmalta, mikäli nousut ja laskut kyetään vuorottelemaan niin, että väliin jää tarvittava turvamarginaali.

Mitenkähän tuo käytännössä toimisi vaikkapa go around tilanteissa? Odottaako lähtevä kone, kun saapuvan reverssi aukeaa, ja painuu sitten taivaalle? Entäs jos laskeva menee pitkäksi?

Lontoon alueen lentokenttäsuunnitelmia miettivä komissio on löytänyt taas yhden uuden kiitotievaihtoehdon entisten lisäksi. Heathrowlle joko lisättäisiin yksi uusi kiitotie tai sitten vain toista nykyisistä kiitoteistä pidennettäisiin 6000 metriin asti, jolloin se voisi toimia "kahtena kiitotienä" jolloin toinen entisistä olisi numero 3. Myös Gatwickille ehdotetaan uutta kiitotietä. Kokonaan uusista lentokentistä ei nyt puhuta mitään.

Heathrow väittää uuden kolmannen kiitotien tuovan kansantaloudelle 100 miljardin punnan edestä kasvua, Gatwick tyytyy esittämään 30 miljardin punnan edestä "hyvää". Sir Richard Branson ehdottaa, että sekä Heathrowlle että Gatwickiin on rakennettava kaksi uutta kiitotietä kumpaankin, koska siinä vaiheessa kun kiitotieasiasta on saatu aikaan joku päätös ja uusi(a) kiitotie(teitä) rakennettu valmiiksi, kapasiteetin tarve on jo ehtinyt kasvaa siitä ohitse, joten radikaaleja päätöksiä on tehtävä nyt, mikäli Lontoo ja Englanti aiotaan pitää kilpailukykyisenä.

The UK's Airports Commission has rejected a plan for a new hub airport in the Thames Estuary, leaving just London Gatwick and Heathrow in the running for future expansion.

 

Airports Commission chair Howard Davies says that after detailed study, the body has concluded that the proposal for a four-runway hub to the east of London had "substantial disadvantages that collectively outweigh its potential benefits".

 

He says: "While we recognise the need for a hub airport, we believe this should be a part of an effective system of competing airports to meet the needs of a widely spread and diverse market like London's."

 

The Commission chief adds that there are "serious doubts" about the delivery and operation of a large hub in Kent and says overcoming the environmental concerns "may prove impossible". The cost of the plan was also a factor, Davies says, with even the "least ambitious version" of the scheme costing between £70 billion ($116 billion) and £90 billion.

 

 

London Mayor Boris Johnson has said his proposal for an island airport in the Thames estuary is not dead, despite the Airports Commission rejecting the idea.

 

Commission chairman Sir Howard Davies said the huge cost, economic disruption and environmental concerns made the proposal unviable.

 

The mayor called this short-sighted, but said plans to expand either Gatwick or Heathrow airports would fail.

 

These plans face huge opposition and no government would back them, he claimed.

 

The proposal for a Thames Estuary airport - dubbed Boris Island because of the mayor's strong backing - would have led to the development of a four-runway airport on the Isle of Grain.

Gatwickin kenttä lupaa perustaa 20 miljoonan punnan eli 27,6 miljoonan euron suuruisen rahaston, josta tuettaisiin Gatwickistä lähtevien alueellisien lentoyhteyksien perustamista, mikäli Gatwick saa rakentaa toisen kiitotien.

Lentokenttäkomission on tarkoitus antaa raporttinsa lopultakin tämän kuun loppuun mennessä, mutta huhun mukaan asia saattaa viivästyä, mikä ei välttämättä olisi mikään yllätys. While describing the other shortlisted schemes - the extension of Heathrow's northern runway and an additional runway at London Gatwick - as credible options, it says the Commission has "unanimously concluded" that the proposal for a new north-west runway at Heathrow Airport, combined with a "significant package of measures" to address environmental and community impacts, presents the "strongest case" and offers the greatest strategic and economic benefits.

 

"The Commission’s recommendation is a fundamentally different proposition from previous proposals to expand at Heathrow," it adds. "It delivers a full-length runway, maximising the connectivity gain. It is situated further west than the current runways, which will help to reduce the number of people affected by noise. And it is accompanied by strong measures to limit the impacts on those living nearby."

 

Those measures include a ban on scheduled night flights between 23:30 and 06:00 as well as a firm parliamentary commitment not to pursue a fourth runway for the hub.

Lontoon lentokenttäsuunnitelma tämäkin: Flybe haluaisi aloittaa aikataulunmukaisen lentotoiminnan vain 10 km Heathrown kentästä pohjoiseen sijaitsevalta RAF Northoltilta, joka on sotilaskäytön lisäksi vilkas yksityislentokenttä. RAF Northoltin kiitotie on n. 1700 m pitkä, ja yksityisten lentojen määrän kattoraja on tällä hetkellä nousemassa 40:een per päivä ja 12000:een per vuosi. Flybe haluaisi aloittaa 2 edestakaisella lennolla päivittäin viidelle "läheiselle" kentälle ja ehdottaa lisäksi pikabussiyhteyttä RAF Northoltin ja Heathrown välille, jotta matkustajat saadaan siirrettyä jatkolennoille molempiin suuntiin.

 

Flybe (BE, Exeter) has petitioned the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence to reconsider its proposal to open up RAF Northolt to scheduled commercial traffic. Currently, the north-west London airfield is used by business jets and Royal Air Force (RR, Brize Norton) transport flights.

 

However, the Financial Times reports the carrier recently submitted plans to begin twice-daily return flights to five local airports as a means of improving domestic connectivity as well as relieving strain on London Heathrow, located just just 16km away. Flybe also proposed setting up a fast bus link to Heathrow for connecting passengers.

 

“Northolt has, for too long, been the preserve of the elite with their private jets," Saad Hammad, Flybe’s CEO, said.

The British government has delayed the politically-charged decision on where to build an additional airport runway, prompting business leaders to accuse David Cameron's government of putting short-term politics over the long-term national interest.

 

The Prime Minister had promised to say by the end of the year whether he backed a GBP£23 billion runway at London's Heathrow Airport after a 3 year independent review named the site, west of London, as the preferred location.

 

Instead Cameron's government said late on Thursday it needed more information on the environmental impact before it could sign off on an issue that has split the party and is already 25 years in the making.

London Heathrow has been campaigning for 25 years to build an additional runway and a decision had been expected this summer, after it was pushed back by the government from last year.

 

But after his side lost the vote on the country's EU membership, Prime Minister David Cameron said he would resign by October, and a Conservative leadership contest has begun.

Heathrown lentokenttäyhtiön osakkeenomistajat ovat ilmoittaneet uudelle pääministerille Theresa Maylle olevansa valmiita sijoittamaan uuteen kiitotiehen 16 miljardia puntaa (eli tämänhetkisen kurssin mukaan 19 miljardia euroa) yksityistä rahaa. Uusi liikenneministeri Chris Grayling kertoo haluavansa nopeuttaa uudesta kiitotiestä päättämisen prosessia ja tutustuvansa asiaan muutaman viikon verran. Heathrown kansainvälinen omistajaryhmittymä on nyt ensimmäisen kerran kertonut olevansa valmis maksamaan Heathrown kiitotielaajennuksen.

Appointed last week, Transport Minister Chris Grayling said in a BBC radio interview he wanted to "move rapidly" with making a decision about where to build a new runway, and would be looking at the matter in the coming weeks.
