Britannian ilmavoimien hävittäjät saattavat parhaillaan pakistanilaista matkustajakonetta, joka käännytettiin Manchesterin lentokentältä.

 

Brittipoliisin mukaan syynä on "tapahtuma" koneessa. Enempää viranomaiset eivät ole kertoneet.

 

Kone oli tulossa Pakistanin toiseksi suurimmasta kaupungista Lahoresta.

 

Koneessa on noin 300 matkustajaa ja miehistön jäsentä.

Plane sent to UK's designated counter-terrorism airport

 

Two Typhoon jets from RAF Coningsby have been scrambled to escort a passenger airliner. The Pakistan International Airways jet has been diverted to Stansted airport which is the UK's designated counter terrorism airport.

 

 

"Typhoon aircraft from RAF Coningsby have been launched to investigate an incident involving an aircraft in UK airspace," an MoD spokesman said.

 

Sky correspondent Alastair Bunkall said: "It is potentially precautionary, it doesn't necessarily mean there is a direct or real threat. Sometimes this might happen simply because of an incident on board involving a single passenger.

 

"It would be wrong at the moment to draw any conclusions but an incident nonetheless that the military feel is necessary to carry out this operation to make sure that plane lands safely at Stansted Airport."

 

 

Early indications that 'plane not subject of terror attack'

 

A British security source has told Reuters news agency that early indications do not suggest that the plane is the subject of a terror attack.

Pilot 'requested diversion due to disruptive passenger'

 

The Guardian reports that the pilot of the plane that has been diverted to Stansted Airport asked for this to happen because he was concerned about a disruptive passenger who had started shouting.

Essex Police have arrested two men on suspicion of endangerment of an aircraft after a Pakistan International Airlines plane was diverted from Manchester to Stansted.

A relative of two PIA flight passengers said he spoke to his father on the phone after the plane landed at Stansted Airport. Zohaib Sattar said his father Abdul told him there was "no warning or threat" before the flight was diverted.

 

Zohaib Sattar said: "They have taken two people off the plane and are checking the plane all over. "The rest are just sat there waiting for further information."

 

 

A passenger told Pakistan's GEO TV that the two men arrested on board a Pakistan International Airlines plane had tried to move towards the cockpit during the flight. Nauman Rizvi told the news channel that after the men were taken away by police, the flight crew told passengers there had been a terrorist threat and that the pilot had raised an alarm.

 

Another passenger, Umari Nauman, told Sky News, "The cabin crew informed us that basically they tried to come into the cockpit a few times, and because they had been asked not to do that they got into a bit of an argument with the crew and made a few threats". Ms Nauman said all the passengers had been ordered to leave their possessions on board before leaving the plane.
