CHICAGO, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Boeing Company (NYSE: BA) today said it expects a pre-tax charge against third-quarter results of approximately $1.0 billion due to increased production costs and the difficult market conditions affecting its 747-8 program.

 

Approximately $640 million of the charge reflects higher estimated costs to produce 747-8 airplanes at both Boeing and supplier facilities. As the program assembled major components of initial 747-8 Freighters during the third quarter, it became clear that late maturity of engineering designs has caused greater than expected re-work and disruption in manufacturing. This is resulting in additional resources being applied on the program and higher supplier expenses, which are the primary cost drivers.

 

The remaining $360 million of the charge relates to challenging market conditions and the company's decision to maintain the 747-8 production rate at 1.5 airplanes per month nearly two years longer than previously planned, deferring an increase to 2 per month. Higher allocation of fixed expenses and volume-based penalties to suppliers are the main drivers of the additional costs.

 

Because the 747 program is in a loss position, costs associated with the factors above will be immediately recorded in the third quarter for future 747-8 deliveries.

 

The company now expects first flight of the 747-8 Freighter to occur by early next year with the flight test program taking place in 2010. First delivery of the 747-8 Freighter is now expected in the fourth quarter of 2010. First delivery of the Intercontinental passenger variant remains scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2011.

The third-quarter tax benefit related to the 747 charge and the previously announced 787 charge is expected to be approximately 31 percent. The full-year tax benefit for both charges is expected to be approximately 37 percent. Boeing will update its 2009 financial guidance on October 21 when it reports third-quarter results.

Norwegian on lisännyt Boeingilta tilattujen 737-800-koneiden määrää kuudella yhteensä 48:aan ja lisäksi solminut leasingsopimuksen kuudesta koneyksilöstä.  Syksystä 2010 lähtien koneisiin tulee uusi "Boeing Sky Interior"-sisustus, johon luvataan lisää väljyyttä aikaisempaan verrattuna.

Air New Zealand ostaa Airbusilta neljätoista A320-konetta, joilla korvataan 15 Boeing 737:ää, mikä mm. mahdollistaa kapasiteetin lisäyksen, koska niihin mahtuu 171 matkustajaa ja 737-300:aan vain 133. Yhtiön mukaan nyt on hyvä aika ostaa, mistä voitaneen päätellä, ettei yhtiön tarvinnut maksaa täyttä listahintaa. Air NZ:llä on ennestään 12 A320:tä. Ensimmäinen kone toimitetaan tammikuussa v. 2011.

Embraer haluaa aloittaa E190-koneiden kokoonpanon Kiinassa, missä yhteisyritys jo valmistaa ERJ-145-koneita, ottaakseen hyödyn Kiinan talouden ja kysynnän kasvusta. Ongelmana on se, että kiinalaiset yhtiöt saattavat tilata mieluummin kiinalaisten omaa konetyyppiä ARJ-21:tä, joka on kuitenkin kapasiteetiltaan pienempi kuin E190.

Turkish Airlines on varmistanut seitseman Airbus A330-300-koneen tilauksen, jonka aiesopimus julkistettiin Pariisin ilmailunayttelyssa.

 

Turkkilaiset ovat kasvattaneet tilaustaan vielä kolmella A333:lla, joten yhteismäärä on nyt kymmenen. MoU on allekirjoitettu myös kahdesta A330-200F-rahtikoneesta.

Boeing odottaakin konetilausten määrän kasvavan taas vuodesta 2012 eteenpäin. Jo nyt on näköpiirissä rahtikoneiden tilausten piristymistä. Tällävälin Boeingilla riittää töitä aikaisemmin tilattujen koneiden toimittamisessa, missä ei nähdä suurempaa ongelmaa vaikka kauppojen rahoittaminen on ollutkin lentoyhtiöille tilapäisesti vaikeampaa.

Airbus sales were still down sharply from the 2007 show

Plane maker Airbus has received over five times the orders by value of US rival Boeing at the Dubai air show.

 

Airbus received $5.3bn (£3.2bn) in orders and letters of intent, against two orders worth $800m from Boeing.

 

"We had a good air show, better than many expected," said Airbus chief operating officer John Leahy.

 

But sales are down sharply from the last time the biannual show was held in 2007, when they received a combined $75bn in orders and letters of intent.

 

Mr Leahy said this was a reflection of the sluggish global economy.

 

"Our industry is not out of the woods yet. There will be a difficult winter ahead of us," he said.

 

"But with the deals we made in Dubai and the interest in our products that we saw here, spring may not be that far away."

 

Ethiopian Airlines placed an order for 12 Airbus A350-900s worth $2.9bn, and the plane maker also sold two A380 super-jumbos.

 

Boeing announced deals for 11 737-800 jetliners to Algeria's government-run Air Algerie and Tassili Airlines.

 

Organisers said this year's show had a total of $13bn in orders so far, less than a 10th of the $155bn of deals inked with all manufacturers at the 2007 show.

Wall Street Journal kertoo, oletettavasti "asiasta perillä oleviin lähteisiin" nojaten, United Airlinesin julkistavan tänään 50 laajarunkokoneen tilauksen, joka jakautuu puoliksi Airbusin ja puoliksi Boeingin kesken. United pyysi aikaisemmin tarjoukset molemmilta jopa 150 koneesta.
