Airbus’ first A321LR (Long Range), MSN7877, has accomplished its maiden flight following a mission lasting 2 hours and 36 minutes. The aircraft powered by CFM Leap-1A engines is now set to undergo a nearly 100 hour flight test programme, including trans-Atlantic missions, for EASA and FAA Type Certification in Q2 2018. Entry into service is targeted for Q4 2018.

The aircraft’s crew comprised: Experimental Test Pilots Yann Beaufils and Peter Lofts as well as Flight Test Engineers Frank Hohmeister, Jim Fawcett, Cedric Favrichon and Cabin Specialist Alexander Gentzsch. During the flight, the crew tested the aircraft’s flight controls, engines and main systems including flight envelope protections, both at high and low speed.

Klaus Roewe, Head of A320 Programme stated: “Thanks to its outstanding performance and unbeatable efficiency, the A321LR will allow our customers to perform flights of up to 4,000nm, allowing them to open new routes – for example transatlantic - and conquer new markets.”

The A321LR features a new door configuration, enabling its operators to accommodate up to 240 passengers in Airbus’ widest Single Aisle fuselage in the sky. The new Airspace by Airbus cabin available on the A320 Family additionally enhances the passengers’ unrivalled travel experience. With further options, combining an increased Maximum Take Off Weight (MTOW) of 97 tonnes and a third Additional Centre Fuel Tank (ACT), the aircraft’s range extends to 4000nm (7400 km), allowing airlines to tap into new market opportunities.

Incorporating the latest engines, aerodynamic advances, and cabin innovations, the A321neo offers a significant reduction in fuel consumption of 20 percent by 2020. With more than 1900 orders received from over than 50 customers, to date the A321neo has captured a solid 80 percent market share, making it the true aircraft of choice in the Middle of the Market.

The grounding follows the emergency landing of an IndiGo A320neo in in Ahmedabad on a service from Lucknow on 12 March. The aircraft "experienced  technical glitch with its Number 2 engine". Two similar cases occurred recently, the DGCA notes: a Jammu-bound GoAir A320neo returned to Leh on 24 February and a Kolkata-bound IndiGo A320neo returned to Mumbai on 5 March.

Tel Aviv based ARKIA Israeli Airlines which is majority owned by Jordache Enterprises, has taken delivery of its first A321LR becoming the launch operator of the world’s most flexible and capable large single-aisle aircraft ever.

The first A321LR should normally have been delivered to launch customer Primera, but the airline went bankrupt before the delivery.

A320 family programme manager Klaus Roewe, speaking to FlightGlobal in Hamburg during the first A321LR customer delivery, indicated the current direction of studies on potential A321neo evolution. The A321LR has a MTOW of 97t and a range of 4,000nm.

Noin kolme vuotta ensimmäisten A320neo toimitusten jälkeen FlightGlobal on kysynyt koneen operaattoreilta käyttökokemuksia.

Kysyttäessä koneella operoivat yhtiöt kommentoivat sitä muun muassa näin:
- A320neo täyttää valmistajan lupaukset polttoaineen säästöstä
- myös öljyn kulutus on puolittunut vanhoihin CFM65 moottoroituihin Airbusseihin nähden.
- koneissa on ollut etenkin alkuvaiheessa toimitusongelmia
- moottoriongelmia on esiintynyt erityisesti Pratt & Whitney's PW1100G -moottoreissa, joihin on sittemmin tullut paljon ohjelmistopäivityksiä ja korjauksia mm. laakerointiin.
- PW moottoroiduissa eräänä ongelmana on ollut pitkä käynnistysaika lämpöjen tasaamiseksi. Sittemmin aikaa on saatu lyhenemään, mutta se on edelleen pidempi kuin A320ceo:lla.
- CFM Leap - moottoreissa on havaittu pinnoiteongelmia  korkeapaineturbiinien suojauksissa, joiden ongelmat on korjattu viime vuoden aikana.
- ainakin Lufthansa on kohdannut värinäongelmia PW1100G -moottoreissa, jonka vuoksi niitä on jouduttu vaihtamaan.Lufthansalle on tuottanut ongelmia saada vaihtomoottoreita tarvittavalla tahdilla.

- Lufthansan mukaan A320neo tekninen luotettavuus on jäänyt huomattavasti alhaisemmaksi kuin vanhemmalla A320ceo kalustolla.Mielipiteet luotettavuuserojen syistä eroavat siitä riippuen keneltä kysytään. P&W perustelee asiaa, että luotettavuus on jo erittäin hyvällä tasolla siihen nähden, että moottorimalli on vasta sen elinkaarensa alkuvaiheessa.

Toimituksissa Airbus ei ole vielä aivan saanut kiinni alkuperäistä tavoitetta, mutta uskoo pääsevänsä tavoitteeseen 60 toimitusta kuukaudessa (!) vuoden 2019 puoliväliin mennessä.

The CFM International Leap-1A-powered aircraft, leased from GECAS, has been configured with 76 lie-flat seats.

Canada's Air Transat has put its own A321LR (C-GOIE) – a Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-powered twinjet – on the oceanic routes, following recent delivery, and TAP Portugal has also embarked on New York operations with the type.

TAP received the Leap-powered aircraft (CS-TXA) on 4 April. It commenced transatlantic services with it on 1 June, flying from the city of Porto to Newark – a great-circle distance of 2,900nm.

Airbus’ A321XLR [extra long range, ed.-] jet, the manufacturer’s longest-range single-aisle aircraft, has performed a more than 13-hour test flight across Europe without a refueling stop.

The Airbus A321XLR prototype plane, registered F-WXLR, took off for the type’s longest test flight to date from Toulouse–Blagnac Airport (TLS) in France on December 13, 2022.

According to flight history data found on Flightradar24.com, it took 13 hours and 15 minutes for the aircraft to make a circle flight across Europe, initially flying towards the direction of the United Kingdom, then making a turn past Oslo, Berlin, Prague, Rome, Sicily, and Sardinia before returning to Toulouse.

The flight was conducted by Airbus as part of its newest long-range twinjet development program, which was officially launched during the Paris Air Show in 2019.

Built to fly as far as 4,700 nautical miles (8,700 kilometers), the A321 is expected to make it cheaper for airlines to offer longer flights when compared to the operating cost of larger twin-aisle aircraft.  The unique range of the jet is enabled by a permanent RCT [Rear Center Tank, ed.-], which can hold 12,900 liters of fuel.

The test aircraft – MSN11058, also known as FTV2 – departed Toulouse on 20 February for the airport at Iqaluit.
