Airbus A330:stä tehdään parannettu versio, A330neo

Airbus on julkistanut Farnboroughin näyttelyn avajaisten alla tuovansa markkinoille jo jonkin aikaa huhutun parannetun A330neon. Uudesta konetyypistä tehdään kaksi versiota, A330-800neo ja A330-900neo. Moottorina tulee olemaan Rolls Royce Trent 7000. Polttoaineenkulutuksen odotetaan pienenevän 14 % verran nykyisiin malleihin nähden, ja toimintamatka pitenee 400 NM. Parannuksia tulee myös koneiden matkustamoihin. A330neon toimitukset alkavat v. 2017 lopulla.

 

Airbus is to go ahead with a re-engining programme for its long-haul A330, confirming that the two variants will be designated the A330-800neo and -900neo.

 

The aircraft is set to enter service in the fourth quarter of 2017 and be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines.

 

Airbus disclosed its long-awaited decision ahead of the opening of the first day’s trade at the Farnborough air show.

Comparing the A330neo to the Boeing 787-9, the most popular version of the Dreamliner, Airbus sales chief John Leahy said it would have the same "cash operating costs" and significantly lower capital costs, making it "an unbeatable plane in that category".

 

Boeing disputes these claims as well as Airbus's forecasts of more than 1,000 potential sales for the A330neo. But that has not prevented its sales chief stepping up the market battle.

 

"Clearly our competitor is pursuing this product and thinks it is a great way to compete against the 787-8 and 787-9, which is an interesting change in their strategy because we thought they were building the A350-800 and A350-900 to compete against those airplanes," said Boeing senior vice president John Wojick.

 

"Airbus is saying 'my airplane isn’t as efficient as Boeing's, so maybe Boeing won't react'. Well, we are going to react," he told Reuters in Doha. Boeing declined to elaborate.

 

Analysts say Boeing has three main options: do nothing, fine-tune the 787's design or retaliate with lower prices.

Airbus on saanut EASA:n hyväksynnän korotetulla 242 tonnin maksimilentoonlähtömassalla varustetulle A330-300-mallille, jonka runkorakenne tulee olemaan pohjana tulevalle A330neo:lle. MTOM:n korotus antaa operaattoreille mahdollisuudet valita 500 NM pitemmän toimintamatkan tai kantaa suurempaa kuormaa. Aerodynamisten parannusten johdosta polttoaineenkulutuskin voi vähetä aina 2 prosenttiin asti.

 

The European Aviation Safety Agency today granted certification to Airbus for its new increased-takeoff-weight version of the A330 airliner, offering increased range or payload. The A330-300 has a maximum gross takeoff weight of 242 metric tons (533,510 pounds), which is 7 metric tons (15,432 pounds) more than the original A330-300.

 

“The latest A330’s maximum takeoff weight of 242 metric tons, combined with various aerodynamic refinements and increased fuel capacity means that soon operators will benefit from an extended range of up to 500 nautical miles or [the ability to] carry greater payload,” explained A330 program head Eric Zanin. “Moreover, they will do so with a fuel-consumption reduction of up to two percent.”

 

The 242-ton A330 airframe is the basis for development of the re-engined A330neo. To date, 11 airlines have selected the increased maximum takeoff weight option for new A330s they have on order.

Hmh... Eikös tuon mallin alkuperäinen maksimi lentoonlähtöpaino ollut 212 tonnia? Eli kasvu olisi ollut 30 tonnia. Airbus itse sanoo, että maksimi lentomatka on kasvanut 50% alkuperäisestä, mikä ei varmaan onnistu kasvattamalla lentoonlähtöpainoa 3%:

Slated for take-off from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport in southwestern France – home to the A330 final assembly line – the initial aircraft is one of three jetliners earmarked for flight tests and certification of Airbus’ two A330neo variants: the A330-900, and the smaller A330-800.

Performing this week’s maiden flight will be an A330-900 variant, to be joined by one more A330-900 and one A330-800 version. Altogether, they are to accumulate some 1,400 hours of flight time, validating their handling characteristics, system operations, engine performance, cabin functionality and compatibility on airline-type routes.

The A330-900 is planned to receive type certification and enter service with TAP Portugal as the initial airline operator by mid-2018.

Pilots from TAP Portugal were lucky enough to test fly the A330-900neo testbed aircraft in preparation for when the carrier is to receive the first of its type later this year.

In Toulouse yesterday, Nuno Cardoso, TAP’s A330/A340 chief pilot followed by Victor Pereira, TAP’s A330 Fleet Instruction Coordinator tested the aircraft to demonstrate the performance of this new aircraft variant.

The two TAP captains were accompanied by Airbus test pilot Thierry Bourges, who had overall responsibility in the test program of this variant. With the carrier being the launch customer, the captains expressed very pleased behaviors and were happy with how the aircraft acted in the testing phase.

Delta Air Lines has ordered 10 additional Airbus A330-900 widebody aircraft, expanding their A330neo order book from 25 to 35 aircraft.

This latest order supports Delta’s international growth strategy in the near to medium term.

Simultaneously, Delta and Airbus have agreed to defer 10 previously ordered A350 XWBs to 2025-26 in order to accommodate the airline’s long-term growth strategy. Delta currently operates 11 A350-900 aircraft and expects a further four in 2019-2020.
