Virgin Galactic -yhtiön lentolaite Space Ship Two on tuhoutunut koelennolla.

 

Avaruuden turistimatkoille tarkotettua konetta testattiin Mojaven autiomaassa, Californiassa sijaitsevassa lentotukikohdassa.

 

Koneessa oli kaksihenkinen miehistö. Toistaiseksi ei tiedetä, ovatko he pelastautuneet laskuvarjoilla.

 

Lentäjät ilmoittivat hieman ennen koneen tuhoutumista, että koneessa oli poikkeustilanne.

Siitä, kuinka kokeiluasteella vielä tunnutaan olevan, kertoo myös se, että tuhoutunut alus, N339SS oli ainoa valmiina oleva alus niistä viidestä, jotka on suunniteltu tällä haavaa rakennettavan. Sarjan kakkonen on kylläkin tekeillä, tässä kuussa annetun lausunnon mukaan 60 % valmiina. Js kun katsotaan taaksepäin, niin siitä, kun SpaceShip One voitti Ansari X prize-palkinnon pääsemällä todistettavasti yli 100 km korkeuteen on jo 10 vuotta (sehän tapahtui 4.10.2004). Kymmenessä vuodessa ei siis ole päästy"valmiiseen pöytään". Ja nyt tulee väkisinkin lisää viivettä. - NTSB lähettää tutkijatiimin paikalle.

Avaruusturvallisuusjärjestö IAASS:n (International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety) mukaan Virgin Galacticia oli varoitettu turvallisuuspuutteista lukuisia kertoja ennen kohtalokasta onnettomuutta. Yhtiö ei kuitenkaan väitteen mukaan ole piitannut huomautuksista.

The pilot who miraculously survived the Virgin spaceship disaster has revealed how he was blasted from the wreckage of the disintegrating rocket ship and plummeted nearly ten miles back to Earth.

 

Having suffered serious injuries, the experienced test pilot only regained consciousness halfway into his fall but was composed enough to give a thumbs-up to colleagues in a passing aircraft to show he was alive.

 

The craft’s rocket was ignited at 50,000ft – nearly ten miles above sea level. The pilots, wearing oxygen masks, were pinned against their seats by gravitational forces as the craft accelerated at more than 900mph.

 

Then disaster occurred. Preliminary investigations suggest that the rocket ship’s folding wings – designed to slow it down and achieve safe speeds during landing – deployed early, causing the ship to break up due to the tremendous turbulence around the craft.

 

Alsbury was trapped in the cockpit but Siebold was thrown clear of the wreckage or somehow unbuckled his seatbelt. He then plunged towards Earth at speeds topping 120mph.

 

Witnesses reported seeing Siebold descending with part of the base of his seat still attached. It is likely that his oxygen mask, attached to a portable tank, remained in place. But at that altitude, the sudden decompression and extreme G-forces would have caused him to black out in seconds.

 

His emergency parachute deployed at around 20,000ft. It is not known if he pulled the cord or if it unfurled automatically. Both pilots were wearing parachutes calibrated to open automatically at a certain height in the event they became unconscious during an emergency.

Probable Cause

The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of this accident was Scaled Composites’ failure to consider and protect against the possibility that a single human error could result in a catastrophic hazard to the SpaceShipTwo vehicle. This failure set the stage for the copilot’s premature unlocking of the feather system as a result of time pressure and vibration and loads that he had not recently experienced, which led to uncommanded feather extension and the subsequent aerodynamic overload and in-flight breakup of the vehicle.

1. Although the copilot made the required 0.8 Mach callout at the correct point in the flight, he incorrectly unlocked the feather immediately afterward instead of waiting until SpaceShipTwo reached the required speed of 1.4 Mach.

2. The unlocking of the feather during the transonic region resulted in uncommanded feather operation because the external aerodynamic loads on the feather flap assembly were greater than the capability of the feather actuators to hold the assembly in the unfeathered position with the locks disengaged.

Seuraava SpaceShipTwo-yksilö on valmistumassa. Rollout-tilaisuus on 19. helmikuuta. Koelento-ohjelmaa ei ole vielä lyöty lukkoon, mutta kaikki viittaa siihen, että toiminta pääsee taas vauhtiin.

In the ceremony planned for next month, the new SpaceShipTwo will be rolled out of Virgin Galactic's Final Assembly, Integration and Test Hangar, or FAITH, for a spectacular photo op. The flight test schedule for the new spacecraft has not yet been firmly established.

While music swelled in a hanger at the Mojave Air and Space Port, Branson stood through the sunroof of a white Range Rover. From behind a curtain, the vehicle slowly pulled the replacement for the rocket ship that broke apart in midair above the Mojave Desert nearly 16 months ago, killing one of two pilots.

 

Virgin Galactic said SpaceShipTwo has already begun a “rigorous test campaign” of the rocket plane's parts and components, including putting a spaceship cabin through flight pressure simulations and nearly 100 full-scale tests of the rocket motor system. The company said it is now entering a phase where it will test the spaceship as a whole, including its electrical systems and “moving parts.”

 

“Our commitment to safety can be measured in our commitment to testing,” said Mike Moses, senior vice president of operations at Virgin Galactic. “We have tested thousands of elements of this spaceship, and we will be testing thousands more.”
