B-29 Doc lentää syksyllä

Maailma saa syksyllä toisen lentävän B-29 Superfortressin FiFi:n rinnalle, kun Doc pääsee taas siivilleen Wichitassa, Kansasissa. Koneita tehtiin yli 4000, ja tämä yksilö valmistui nimenomaa samassa paikassa. Kunnostukseen oli saatu avuksi myös eräs 85 v rouva, joka oli ollut laittamassa niittejä koneeseen jo ensimmäisellä kerralla.

 

"Ensilennon" pitäsi tapahtua loka-marraskuussa, joten seurataan tilannetta. Ohessa linkki koneen kunnostusta käsittelevälle sivustolle.

 

Ensi viikollahan tulee kuluneeksi 70 vuotta siitä, kun toinen B-29, Enola Gay teki sotahistoriaa.

"Doc"in ystävät ovat saaneet kokoon tarpeeksi rahaa koelento-ohjelman läpiviemiseen kickstarter-kampanjan avulla. Yli 150000 dollaria on koossa, minkä pitäisi riittää, ellei mitään poikkeuksellista tapahdu.

 

The nonprofit group working to get the B-29 “Doc” flying again has met — and exceeded — their Kickstarter goal of $137,500, and say they now have the funds they need to complete the flight-test program. “Words cannot express the excitement and gratitude felt by our team right now,” Doc’s Friends wrote on their Facebook page. As of Wednesday morning, the campaign had raised more than $153,000, and will continue to accept contributions through Friday, 7:01 A.M. EDT, Oct. 30. All the additional funds will “go straight toward supporting Doc’s mission as a flying museum,” the group said.

Nyt on ongelmana se, ettei kunnostuksen jälkeistä ensilentoa ole päästy suorittamaan, ja "Doc" joutuu olemaan ulkosalla, koska hallitilaa ei löydy. Tilapäistä rakennelmaa harkitaan. Kunnostajien mukaan moottoreita ei voi käyttää, jos lämpötila on alle 50 F (esim. tänään Wichitassa 30 F), joten konetta ei voida siirtää muualle lentämälläkään, mahdollisesti ennen kevättä.

 

“Doc,” the B-29 that has been lovingly restored by hundreds of volunteers over many years in Wichita, was taken outside this fall in hopes of a return to flight — but now winter is setting in, putting those flying dreams on hold, and there is no space available in the local hangars to bring the airplane indoors. Doc’s Friends, the volunteer group working to restore the airplane, says the engines can’t be run when the temperature goes below 50 degrees. They are worried about leaving the airplane outside and vulnerable to snow, rain, freezing rain, ice and hail, but so far they have no other option.

16 vuotta restauroinnin alkamisen jälkeen on nyt päästy siihen pisteeseen, että "Doc"ille on myönnetty lentokelpoisuustodistus. Rullauskokeita ja ensilentoa odotellessa.

 

The newly restored B-29 "Doc" now has an FAA airworthiness certificate, 16 years after restorers brought the historic aircraft to Wichita. Doc's Friends, the organization behind the project, said Friday a first flight is "imminent." The B-29, salvaged from the Mojave Desert in 1987 by Tony Mazzolini, was moved in pieces to Wichita in May 2000 for the restoration, which gained momentum a few years ago with the formation of Doc's Friends. The heavy bomber's four engines started for the first time in September and the team performed a taxi test earlier this month.

 

The restoration team will soon submit a formal request to the U.S. Air Force and Pentagon to gain access to a runway at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita for high-speed taxi and flight tests.

B-29 Doc´in restauroijiille on myönnetty lupa suorittaa rullaustestejä ja koelentoja McConnellin lentotukikohdassa, joten taas ollaan lähempänä ensilentoa..

 

The restoration team for the B-29 “Doc” received Pentagon approval this week to use McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita for completing ground tests and future flight tests. The authorization allows Doc’s flight crew to work with base officials for arranging high-speed taxi tests, followed by a first flight.

B-29 "Doc"in ensilennon ajankohta on nyt sovittu sunnuntaiksi, 17.7. aikaisin aamulla paikallista aikaa Wichitassa, Kansasissa. Luvassa on myös webcast-lähetys paikanpäältä.

 

The B-29 "Doc" will return to the air on July 17, the warbird's restoration team announced Friday. The Superfortress' first flight is slated to take place at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, adjacent to the restoration hangar where volunteers worked for years to rebuild the four-engine heavy bomber. Doc's Friends spokesman Josh Wells told AVweb the flight is subject to favorable conditions, including a southerly wind with no rain. It will take place in the early morning before the heat of the Kansas summer builds up.

Hieno uutinen!! Nyt maailmassa on sitten oikeasti kaksi lentävää superlinnoitusta.  Saapas nähdä, liittyykö tähän laivastoon vielä lisää yksilöitä. Vaikuttaa siltä, että kunnostuksen ja lentokelpoisuuden saavuttamisen kustannukset ovat huimia, ja tietysti jokaisen uuden lentokelpoisen yksilön mukana uutuuden marginaaliarvo laskee. Ilmeisesti Nevadassa tms olisi vielä raatoja, joista voisi yhdistelemällä saada aikaiseksi lentäviä yksilöitä, mutta jäämme odottamaan. Museoissahan näitä on, mutta on hyvä, että edes kaksi lentää...

"Doc" on lentänyt toisen koelennon eilen, lauantaina. Lento kesti noin 52 minuuttia ja sujui ongelmitta.

 

The B-29 known as Doc successfully completed its second flight since being restored to airworthy status. Doc’s second flight lasted approximately 52 minutes at an altitude of four to five thousand feet on a flight pattern east of Wichita, Kans.

 

The historic warbird took off from McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita just after 10 a.m. Central Time and landed just before 11 a.m, Saturday, Oct. 1.

 

“This flight was successful and it gave us another opportunity to put some time on the airplane as we continue to make our way through the flight test campaign and meeting FAA requirements,” said Jim Murphy, Doc’s Friends Restoration Project Manager. “The airplane’s engines and control surfaces performed as expected.”

Tässä linkin takaa löytyvässä jutussa on tarinaa ja kuvia Doc.n restauroinnista. Kone oli 1956 alkaen ohjusmaalina Lake Chinan haroitusalueella Kaliforniassa. Onneksi yksikään ohjus ei osunut, joten nyt tämä kunnostaminen on ollut huomattavasti helpompi prosessi. Toisaalta vanhojen koneiden kunnostamainen lentokuntoon ei koskaan ole ihan helppoa tai halpaa.

Nyt Doc lentää ja kyllä se näyttää hienolta! Yllättävä detsku on se, että tuosta Doc:sta puuttuu perätykkejä lukuunottamatta nuo koneelle niin tyypilliset kauko-ohjatut tornit. Ne jätettiin pois ainakin niistä "silver plated" koneista, joita käytettiin atomiohjelmassa.
