Icelandair ostaa kilpailevan WOW air -lentoyhtiön

Icelandair Group on ilmoittanut aikovansa ostaa WOW airin koko osakekannan mikäli kilpailuviranomaiset ja osakkeenomistajat kaupan hyväksyvät.

Molemmat lentoyhtiöt aiottaisiin jatkossakin pitää erillään eli WOW air brändinä ei olisi katoamassa.

Icelandair Group has agreed to acquire the entire share capital of its budget rival Wow Air.

The group says the share purchase agreement is subject to shareholder approval.

Icelandair Group states that Wow Air shareholders will receive the equivalent of 5.4% of the group’s shares after the transaction.

It states that the two companies will continue to operate under separate brands. The carriers have around a 3.8% combined share of the transatlantic market.

“The acquisition creates opportunity for both companies to become even better prepared to provide international carriers with strong competition in the international airline market,” says Icelandair Group.

Hmmm, kuinkahan monta prosenttia koko Islannin lentoliikenteestä nämä kaksi yhtiötä yhdessä kattavat? Voiko kilpailuviranomainen hyväksyä tällaisen kaupan?

Mikäli puheet WOWin keikkumisesta konkurssin partaalla pitävät paikkaansa, niin taloudellisten asioiden laita varmaankin lieventää minkäänlaista vastarintaa.

Tulee olemaan mielenkiintoista seurata miten käy laivastojen ja konseptien pidemmällä tähtäimellä, korvautuuko Icelandairin 757-koneet suunniteltua aiemmin WOWin A321-koneiden tieltä ja niin edelleen.

Näyttää siltä, että suunniteltu kauppa ei toteudu. Icelandair kertoo syyksi mm. sen, ettei kaikkia asioita saatu järjestykseen ennen huomenna (30.11.) pidettävää yhtiökokousta. WOW Airin tulevaisuus ei nyt näytä kovinkaan ruusuiselta.

The Icelandair Group had warned at the Icelandic stock exchange last Monday, November 26, that they felt like it would be unlikely that all the conditions required for the share purchase agreement would be fulfilled in time for the shareholders meeting, which is due to take place tomorrow, on November 30.

This announcement may affect dearly the already struggling WOW Air. The airline has already downsized its fleet by sending four planes to storage.

With the hope of getting a desperate cash injection from the Icelandair Grup, it is not known how extreme the knock-on effect will be today for the airline.

Iceland-based Wow Air, which introduced Rs 27,000 return fare between India and the US, has decided to pull out of the Delhi route barely a week after its launch. Wow Air, which is set for a change in ownership, has not announced when it will end Delhi flights. However, a report in Iceland Review said that the airline will suspend flights from January 20.

A Bloomberg report on Thursday said the airline plans to lay off 111 employees globally and simplify its operations. This includes a reduction of Wow's fleet to 11 aircraft.

Wow Air will return all its Airbus A330s planes to the lessors. It uses these planes on the Delhi route and this would result in suspension of the route. According to industry sources, the suspension of the Delhi route is not linked to the demand or market potential of India. The Reykjavik flight has been seeing loads upwards of 80 per cent.

WOW Air on joutunut ahtaaseen rakoon, koska Indigo Partnersin kanssa pidettyjen neuvottelujen määräaika päättyi kuun vaihteessa ilman tulosta. WOW Air on joutunut pyytämään lainanantajilta lisäaikaa tämän kuun loppuun.

Kyse on lähinnä siitä, että 75 miljoonaa 10 vuoden aikana ei ole ilmailualalla kovinkaan suuri investointi, ja yhtiön perustajalle Skuli Mogensenille jäisi käytännössä musta pekka käteen.

Wow Air now says all negotiations with Indigo Partners have ceased, but it has subsequently reopened the discussion with Icelandair.

It hopes to conclude talks by next Monday (25 March).

Confirming the news, an Icelandair statement said: “The discussions will be based on the doctrine of competition law regarding the failing firm defence. The discussions will take place in cooperation with the Icelandic authorities.”
