Collings Foundationin B-17 "Nine-O-Nine" tuhoutunut, 7 hlöä menehtynyt

Ikävä uutinen: Collings Foundationin operoima B-17 Flying Fortress "Nine-O-Nine" on tuhoutunut tänään Connecticutin osavaltiossa. Valitettavasti ASN:n uutislinkit eivät näy Euroopan puolella, mutta tekstin perusteella kone ehti olla ilmassa vain viisi minuuttia ja pyysi lupaa palata kentälle pudoten kentän alueelle ja syttyen tuleen, tuhoutuen kokonaan. Kyydissä olleiden kohtalosta teksti ei toistaiseksi kerro.

EDIT: Paikallisen uutissivuston mukaan kyydissä olleista seitsemän on viimeisten tietojen mukaan menehtynyt ja kyydissä olisi ollut yht. 13 henkilöä, joista 6 on vakavasti loukkaantunutta.

A Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, registration N93012, impacted terrain while attempting to return to Windsor Locks-Bradley International Airport, CT.

The aircraft had received clearance for departure from runway 06 at 09:45 hours local time. After takeoff the aircraft made a right-hand turn. At 09:50 the aircraft contacted the Bradley Tower controller for permission to land on runway 06. This was approved. The aircraft apparently crashed shortly afterwards.

 Seven people were killed and six others were injured after the pilot of a World War II bomber crashed at Bradley International Airport Wednesday morning. State Police Commissioner James Rovella said there were six survivors but "tragically" seven died.

Gov. Ned Lamont said several state agencies are involved and on the scene. "Such an unfortunate situation with an historic aircraft. Our prayers are with everyone who was on board."

Todella ikävä uutinen. Sekä onnettomuudessa menehtyneet että myös kone täysin korvaamattomia.

Itse tuli kokeiltua tätä lentoa/konetta 2004 ja täytyy myöntää että oli aika vaikuttava mutta kuitenkin pasifistinen kokemus. Ei ole joskus ollut ihmishengellä paljoa arvoa.

Tämän hetkisen tiedon mukaan seitsemän kuollutta.  Nelosmoottorissa ollut vikaa ja kone kääntynyt takaisin kentälle. Tullut liian matalalla, törmännut ILS kalustoon ja ajautunut oikealle törmäten jäänpoistosäiliöiden luona huoltorakennukseen syttyen tuleen.

Ei varsinaisesti sisällä mitään uutta, tankeista joista on saatu näyte on oikeaa tavaraa, samoin tankkaukseen käytetystä säilöautossa. Nelosmoottorin potkuri on löydetty lepuutettuna.

Ainakin AOPA ePilot-uutiskirje otsikoi, että NTSB:n Preliminary Report’ssa on uutta tietoa. Myös kolmosmoottorissa olisi mahdollisesti ollut ongelmia.

A preliminary NTSB report on the fatal October 2 crash of a vintage Boeing B–17 Flying Fortress in Connecticut includes evidence that the aircraft may have had trouble with more than one of its four engines.”

”The No. 3 engine was recovered from the top of the deicing tank. One blade was impact damaged and near the feather position. The other two blades appeared in a position between low pitch and feather. One propeller blade exhibited a 5-inch tip separation and the separated tip sections were recovered from 100 ft and 700 ft from the main wreckage. The No. 4 engine was recovered from the deice building. All three propeller blades on the No. 4 engine appeared in the feather position."

Restored as a B-17G with a full set of turrets, N207EV was flown for a few years before moving to the Evergreen Museum in Oregon for display. Now transferred to the Collings Foundation, this B-17 will undergo a detailed inspection and restoration to flight-worthy status. This unique B-17 will be a fantastic addition to the National Wings of Freedom Tour, and further the outreach of the Collings Foundation.

Uusi ongelma on se, että FAA ei uusinut Collings Foundationin poikkeuslupaa kuljettaa koneissa matkustajia maksua vastaan, mikä on säätiölle olennainen tulonlähde. Syynä on se, että FAA:n mukaan sovittua miehistön (etenkin crew chiefin) koulutusta ei ole annettu eikä turvallisuus ole vaaditulla tasolla.

Citing lapses in training, maintenance and the lack of a safety culture, the FAA has rejected the Collings Foundation’s permission to carry passengers on revenue flights in its 10 vintage aircraft.

Collings offered revenue rides in the B-17G under the FAA’s Living History Flight Exemptions program, which operators can renew every two years. Collings had applied for the renewal, but the FAA declined to approve it because it said the foundation failed to follow agreed-upon training and maintenance requirements.

Specifically, the FAA found that Collings failed to train the aircraft crew chief, as specified in its operating guidelines. “In an interview with the FAA on March 2, 2020, the crew chief verified that he received no initial training and was unaware of basic information concerning operations under the exemption.

NTSB on julkaissut raporttinsa viikko sitten, ja siinä mainitaan pilotin virhe yhtenä tärkeimmistä onnettomuuteen johtaneista syistä. Pilotti otti telineet ulos liian aikaisin, mikä lisäsi ilmanvastusta ja hidasti koneen nopeutta liian aikaisessa vaiheessa. Pilot error probably caused the 2019 crash of a World War II-era bomber in Connecticut that killed seven people and wounded six others, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a report released Tuesday. It also cited inadequate maintenance as a contributing factor.

The NTSB said the flight data indicated that the landing gear was extended too early, adding drag that slowed the plane, and it was traveling too slow on its return to the airport.

“The B-17 could likely have overflown the approach lights and landed on the runway had the pilot kept the landing gear retracted and accelerated to 120 mph until it was evident the airplane would reach the runway,” the NTSB said.

Surullinen tapaus, joka sai muistelemaan, että kymmenisen vuotta sitten plarailin uteliaana B-17:n Pilots’ Notes -vihkosta juuri tämänsisältöiseltä aukeamalta: moottorihäiriötilanteet, asymmetrinen teho, deadstick landings... kotisohvalta katsellen kone vaikutti huomattavan käsiteltävältä, mutta tositilanne on tositilanne paineineen.
