Bloomberg uutisoi, että ohjussysteemin käyttäjän virhe säätää laitteiston suunta oikeaksi (pohjoinen) paikan vaihdon jälkeen aiheutti virheiden sarjan jossa ukrainalaista konetta luultiin risteilyohjukseksi ja se ammuttiin alas.

AFP-uutistoimiston mukaan ranskalaiset onnettomuustutkijat ovat kertoneet, että pudonneen koneen mustat laatikot ovat saapuneet Ranskaan ja BEA:n tutkijat saavat ne käsiinsä maanantaina eli huomenna. 20 hengen kansainvälinen tiimi alkaa tutkia laatikoiden sisältöä.

The black boxes of a Ukrainian passenger plane Iran forces mistakenly shot down in January have arrived in France, French air investigators said according to AFP.

A source at France's Bureau for Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA) said the boxes had arrived and would be at the agency from Monday.

A 20-member international team would examine the boxes.

"The black boxes were transferred to Paris yesterday by aviation organisation officials and a judge, and their reading will start on Monday," Mohsen Baharvand, Iran's deputy foreign minister for international and legal affairs, was earlier quoted as saying by the Etemad newspaper.

CVR:n tiedot kertovat, että ohjaamossa keskusteltiin, todettiin tilanteen olevan epänormaali ja yritettiin ottaa kone haltuun vielä 19 sekuntia ensimmäisen osuman jälkeen, mutta siinä vaiheessa CVR ja myös FDR menivät mykäksi oletettavasti ensimmäisen ohjuksen osuman aiheuttamien esim. sirpalevaurioiden johdosta. Muuta tietoa mustista laatikoista ei tämän jälkeen saatu.
